Collection: Red Cinder

Cinder cones are steep, conical hills that usually have a prominent crater at the top. Volcanic cinder forms after gas-rich magma is forced upward and fragmented into molten pieces. These fragments cool rapidly as they fall, creating porous, iron-rich rock known as scoria. Over time, the iron within the rock reacts with oxygen. The surface oxidizes, producing deep maroon and burgundy tones. (A similar tone covers much of the surface of Mars with regard to ancient volcanic rock, rich in iron, oxidized over billions of years.)
