Collection: Red Moon

During a total lunar eclipse, Earth moves directly between the Sun and the Moon. The Moon enters the umbra — the darkest central region of Earth’s shadow where direct sunlight is fully blocked. Yet the Sun does not stop shining on the moon. Sunlight passes through Earth’s atmosphere. The atmosphere bends and filters the light. Some light scatters. But red light continues into the umbra and softly illuminates the moon's surface. The crimson moon reflects light that has traveled farther.
