Collection: Red Plasma
About 4.6 billion years ago, a massive cloud of hydrogen gas collapsed under gravity. Fusion in the core produces energy in the form of high-energy photons. That energy migrates outward through the dense plasma by radiative diffusion and convection. Most photons reaching Earth are thermal radiation, i.e., a spectrum of light — visible, infrared, ultraviolet. This steady emission sustains life on Earth. >>> But within that continuous spectrum are narrow spectral lines. When electrons in hydrogen plasma transition between energy states, they emit photons at specific wavelengths. One prominent line is hydrogen-alpha at 656.28 nanometers — seen as deep scarlet. Hydrogen-alpha photons are a tiny fraction of total solar output. They do not dominate energy output. They reveal structure.
