Some asteroids were large enough to melt internally (mostly from radioactive heating). Iron and nickel melted. Heavy metal sank inward. A metallic core formed. At this stage it was uniform and homogeneous. When forces are equal in all directions, matter settles into symmetric solutions. As temperature drops very slowly (1–100°C per million years), the alloy stabilizes. Nickel prefers to redistribute. Because cooling happens over millions of years, atoms have time to find low-energy configurations -- octahedral geometry. Within a planar cut of meteorite, the Thomson-Widmanstätten pattern is what pure symmetry looks like when undisturbed for millions of years.
