Collection: Lightning Sprites

When the electrical field exceeds air’s insulating capacity, lightning discharges to the ground. The upper atmosphere — thin, cold, and electrically sensitive — experiences rapid electric imbalance. At an even higher altitude, the air partially ionizes in response. Nitrogen molecules become excited and emit red light. For a small fraction of a second, towering red filamentary signs of electrical correction appear above the storm.
