Collection: Mantle Emergence

The Earth’s upper mantle is composed primarily of peridotite — dense, dark green rock rich in olivine and pyroxene. Under specific conditions, this mantle partially melts. At temperatures exceeding 1100°C, basaltic magma glows orange due to thermal radiation. When magma reaches the surface — whether along a mid-ocean ridge or at a coastal volcano — the molten basalt becomes briefly visible before cooling into black rock.
